The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq share the same hours: 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. US Eastern time, Monday to Friday. Those hours never change there; what changes is the time in Mexico, because the United States uses daylight saving time and Mexico stopped using it in 2022.
In Central Mexico time
| Time of year | Open | Close |
|---|---|---|
| With US daylight saving time (March to November) | 7:30 | 14:00 |
| Without US daylight saving time (November to March) | 8:30 | 15:00 |
In 2026 US daylight saving time began on Sunday, March 8 and ends on Sunday, November 1. In 2027 it runs from Sunday, March 14 to Sunday, November 7. On the Monday after each change, double-check the time: it is easy to be off by an hour.
If you live in another part of Mexico, adjust for your state; for example, Quintana Roo is one hour ahead of Central time.
If you buy in Mexico through the SIC
The Mexican exchanges adjust their hours to match New York while the US is on daylight saving time, so in practice the SIC trades almost at the same time as Wall Street. Brokerages announce the exact dates each year; in 2026, for example, the session ran from 7:30 to 14:00 from March 9 to October 30.
Watch out for two details:
- If the Mexican exchange is closed, you cannot buy on the SIC, even if New York is open. This happens on Mexican holidays such as September 16.
- If New York is closed, the SIC usually has no reference price for those stocks, even if the Mexican exchange opens.
Days the US market does not open
The New York Stock Exchange closes on these holidays (when they fall on a weekend they move to Friday or Monday):
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday of January)
- Presidents' Day (third Monday of February)
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day (last Monday of May)
- Juneteenth (June 19)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (first Monday of September)
- Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November)
- Christmas Day (December 25)
There are also early-close days at 1:00 p.m. Eastern, such as the Friday after Thanksgiving and, in some years, December 24 and July 3. In Viernes de Invertir, when there is no market on Friday the purchase is made a day earlier, and the email reminder also arrives a day earlier.
Pre-market and after-hours
Before the open and after the close there is an extended session: pre-market (from 4:00 a.m. Eastern at many US brokers) and after-hours (4:00 to 8:00 p.m.). Prices move there when there is news, for example earnings reports, which are almost always released outside regular hours. There are fewer buyers and sellers, so prices can jump more. From Mexico, on the SIC, you normally trade only during regular hours.
What matters to get started
- Wall Street is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern: 7:30 to 14:00 in Central Mexico during US daylight saving time, and 8:30 to 15:00 the rest of the year.
- If either the Mexican or the US exchange is closed, you cannot buy on the SIC.
- You do not need to watch the screen: if you invest long term, any time on your weekly purchase day is fine. See investing every week.
